Stars Of The Future – Stirling – Nov ’24

A fantastic showcase of youngstock saw 379 entries compete across 10 breed sections, at the 14th annual Stars of the Future event at United Auctions’ Stirling Mart.

The interbreed contests were judged by husband and wife team, Jason and Sarah Wareham, who run a farm shop and butchery business and have pedigree and commercial cattle and sheep, on their East Sussex farm.

It was Sarah who selected the best of the native champions, and in the senior section, she chose the Aberdeen-Angus, Foxhill Princess Carina Z178, a 15-month-old heifer from Michael and Melanie Alford, Foxhill, Devon, which was yearling champion at the recent AgriExpo. Sired by Weeton Evolution R447, she is out of last year’s Royal Highland Show breed champion, Blelack Princess Carina X125, which the Alfords had bought at the Blelack dispersal in 2021.

Standing reserve in the senior natives was Rogan Katie 3rd, a 12-month-old Galloway heifer from Dexter and Carolyn Logan, Greenhead, Alva. This Blackcraig Kodiak daughter is out of the couple’s foundation female which they bought privately, Barlaes Katie 42nd.

In the junior natives, it was another Aberdeen-Angus heifer from the Alfords that came to the fore – Foxhill Princess Caroline A265, a 10-month-old daughter of Kilmaluag Eriskay T203, out of Blelack Princess Caroline T867, bought for 28,000gns at the Blelack dispersal. Reserve to that one was David and Tom Bradley Farmer’s Meonside Volantis, a ten-month-old Beef Shorthorn bull calf by Fearn Wyvis, from the family’s herd at Wester Parkgate, Dumfries.

In the senior continental interbreed, Jason Wareham opted for the commercial champion, Shaboozey, a 15-month-old home-bred Limousin cross heifer from Alister and Liz Vance, Bridgehouse, Whithorn. Sired by Homebyres Norham, she is out of a past show heifer, the Limousin cross named ‘Too Glam To Give A Damn’. After a successful summer show season, Shaboozey is next destined for the LiveScot event in Lanark, later this month.

Finishing reserve overall in the seniors was the British Blue, Solway View Taffy, a 13-month-old heifer from Kevin Watret, Annan. Calf champion at the recent AgriExpo, this one is sired by Boheard Overdose and out of Solway View Limelight.

Best of the junior continentals was the Charolais champion, Huttonend Veda, a 10-month-old heifer on its first show outing from Sean Mitchell’s herd at Grassknop, Skelton. She was the first calf to be registered in the UK off the Irish bull, Clenagh Jasper 2, while the dam Huttonend Rose, was successfully shown herself. The reserve junior award went to John Smith Jackson, Hexham, with his commercial winner, Black Pearl, a seven-month-old Limousin cross by Hightown Jacko. She was baby beef champion at the recent North East Live event in Darlington.

The coveted Joe Watson Memorial Trophy, presented to the best pair of animals of the same breed, from the same exhibitor, went to the Highland duo from Robert and Dianne Bradley, Moorside, Bradford, with a bull and a heifer by the same sire. They were Maverick of Moorside, a 22-month-old bull, and Bonnie Melody of Moorside, a 22-month-old heifer which had been placed senior champion in her section. Both are sired by King John of West Edmondsley.

Runners up were the top continental pair, a Limousin duo from Robert and Jean Graham’s Stirling based herd – the yearling bull, Grahams Upbeat, by Ampertaine Elgin, and the yearling heifer, Grahams Umandy, sired by Gunnerfleet Lion.

A new award this year, for the best team of three, went to the British Blue trio, Solway View Taffy, Coul Blue Tequila and Clifftown Up To No Good – winning the Prince of Wales Royal Smithfield Club trophy. The Charolais group of three – Falleninch Valderrama, Huttonend Veda and Foxhillfarm Victorious – were placed reserve.

A strong entry of talented young handlers was won overall by the winner of the junior section, 13-year-old Jim Goldie, Newbiemains, Annan, showing the 15-month-old Simmental bull, Newbiemains Priceless.
